Choreographer Boris Eifman has created a grand artistic statement dedicated to the fate of two celebrated artists — the great sculptor Auguste Rodin and his beloved pupil, muse, and lifelong companion, Camille Claudel.
This love story is imbued with a tragic spirit. For fifteen years, Rodin and Claudel lived side by side, creating artistic masterpieces together. However, their subsequent separation proved fateful for the abandoned and forgotten muse, Camille Claudel. Her mind, weakened by mental illness, was incessantly tormented by suspicions: she envisioned Rodin at the center of imagined conspiracies designed to deprive her of recognition and freedom. Forsaken by all and forgotten by society, she lived in extreme deprivation and lost her sanity. Accusing her beloved of betrayal and suffering from paranoia, she spent thirty years in isolation in a psychiatric clinic, where she died in 1943, devoid of any care or support.
«Rodin, Her Eternal Idol» is a philosophical immersion into a world of human passions, creative genius, and spiritual collapse. Using a unique movement vocabulary, Eifman seeks to unravel the mystery of the human soul as embodied in the vibrant artistic images of Rodin and Claudel. The production extends far beyond a traditional understanding of their work, delving into a profound contemplation of the nature of inspiration, artistic obsession, and sacrifice.
