Ballet "Russian Hamlet" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre: The Story of Paul I in Eifman's Choreography

From August 16 to 21, the Russian Hamlet ballet by the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre will be performed at the Alexandrinsky Theatre. This performance, inspired by the fate of one of the most mysterious and controversial characters in Russian history, Paul I, promises to be a bright event in the cultural life of St. Petersburg. Choreographer Boris Eifman masterfully depicted the tragic confrontation of an extraordinary and spiritually fragile personality with a hostile world built on violence, treachery and lies.

The Russian Hamlet ballet has already won the recognition of audiences and critics around the world. The performance has been shown with incredible success in the USA, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, China, South Korea, Argentina and many other countries. The famous critic Bella Yezerskaya noted: "In terms of the concentration of discoveries and stage metaphors, in terms of emotional intensity, Eifman has surpassed himself this time." The New York Times called Boris Eifman "practically the only choreographer with a special gift for electrifying images and theatrical fantasies."

In the 40th anniversary season, the Eifman Theater decided to revive its famous performances composed in the 1990s. "Russian Hamlet" returned to the stage with an updated choreographic score, which made it even more refined and emotionally intense.

The plot of the ballet tells about the fate of Tsarevich Pavel, reminiscent of the fate of Hamlet, covered in many secrets and mystical omens. Born with a bright worldview and brilliantly educated, he prepared himself to serve the Fatherland. However, the murder of his father, his mother's dislike and the atmosphere of constant surveillance and intrigue plunged the future emperor into a world of hallucinations and spiritual loneliness. Paul, inclined to mysticism, had a premonition of his tragic end and sought power for the better arrangement of Russia. But he remained misunderstood and was brutally murdered.
