Director: Boris Eifman.

On February 22 and 23, the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre will present the ballet Anna Karenina at the Alexandrinsky Theatre.

The appearance of the ballet based on Leo Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina in the theatre's repertoire was a turning point in its history, opening up new means of plastic expressiveness and methods of choreographic psychoanalysis.

Energetic, dramatic, saturated with emotions at the limit of human capabilities, the production will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2025. And tickets for the ballet Anna Karenina are as popular as they were on the day of the premiere. Boris Eifman tirelessly draws inspiration from the classic works of world literature.

Eifman decisively rid the action of all secondary characters and plot lines. Three characters remained in the spotlight: Anna Karenina, her husband Alexei Karenin and her lover Alexei Vronsky.

According to Eifman, it was passion, not love, that led Anna to tragedy. She is unable to resist it. Fear of public condemnation, even maternal love - everything fades next to her. The woman is ready for any hardships and sacrifices, just to satisfy her sensual desire.

Anna's part was performed over the years by various ballerinas of the troupe: Vera Arbuzova, Nina Zmievets, Anastasia Sitnikova, Natalia Povoroznyuk, Daria Reznik, Lyubov Andreeva and others. Each of them managed to bring something of her own, something special, to the audience's understanding of Anna's actions. Vronsky was just as different for each artist. If in Yuri Smekalov's performance he is just a narcissistic, empty-headed handsome man, then in Alexei Turko's version he is a cunning tempter who stubbornly goes to his goal. A loving, suffering young romantic - in Oleg Gabyshev's version.

Which is not surprising, because Eifman's ballet is not about a past life, but about you and me, residents of the 21st century. It is no coincidence that for two decades now this production has remained the hallmark of the entire theater, being also the winner of the prestigious Golden Soffit award in the nomination "Best Theatrical Performance".

Elegant, aesthetic and at the same time frank, sometimes naturalistic, the ballet "Anna Karenina" gives each viewer a unique chance to discover new sides of this tragic story.
