The ballet Crime and Punishment at the Alexandrinsky Theatre: dance, music and philosophy

The Alexandrinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg will host the ballet Crime and Punishment, created by the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre. This work is based on the novel of the same name by F. M. Dostoevsky and is accompanied by music by Gustav Mahler and Boris Tishchenko performed by the Governor's Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg under the direction of Anton Lubchenko. The sets for the production were designed by Zinovy Margolin, the costumes by Olga Shaishmelashvili, and the lighting design by Gleb Filshtinsky and Boris Eifman.

Boris Eifman, turning to classical literary works, strives not only to convey the plot, but also to explore the philosophical and moral aspects embedded in the texts. In Crime and Punishment, he interprets the inner world of Dostoevsky's characters through dance, exploring their emotional and ideological contradictions.

The ballet reconstructs the spiritual path of Rodion Raskolnikov, whose theory about the right of great people to "step over blood" leads him to tragic consequences. The central theme is the hero's struggle with his own conscience and the inevitable collapse of his inhumane theory. An important place in the production is occupied by the image of Sonya Marmeladova, whose sacrificial love helps Raskolnikov find spiritual rebirth.
