The theatre under the direction of Boris Eifman invites art lovers to enjoy the ballet "Anna Karenina"
Using expressive body language, Eifman managed to convey the drama of a woman undergoing internal changes without trying to reproduce every page of the great work verbatim. The audience will find themselves in the epicenter of the Vronsky-Karenina-Karenin love triangle, where the psychological depth of Anna's tragic love will be revealed. This is not the first time Eifman has turned to classical works. He has already staged ballets based on Dostoevsky's works, including The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment. His version of The Seagull won recognition on the best stages of Japan several years ago. Meanwhile, the St. Petersburg public first saw Anna Karenina in the fall of 2005. Since then, the performance has consistently sold out the halls and is extremely popular with both St. Petersburg residents and visitors.
The production of Anna Karenina opened up new horizons in plastic expressiveness and methods of choreographic psychoanalysis. This ballet became an important milestone in Eifman's work, allowing him to explore the inner world of Tolstoy's complex characters through the language of dance with incredible skill. The choreographer sought to touch upon those aspects in the performance that can only be conveyed by ballet, and he succeeded completely. Every movement in the production is brought to perfection, and the music, combining elements from classical to country, makes the past era closer and more understandable to the modern viewer. The reaction to such a bold interpretation was varied, but all critics agreed that no one had created anything like it before Eifman. Only he is capable of penetrating the human soul so deeply and reading Tolstoy between the lines.
This production marked the beginning of Boris Eifman's fruitful collaboration with artist Zinovy Margolin, who subsequently designed almost all of his performances. The costumes created by Vyacheslav Okunev are deliberately minimalistic, as are the sets, without distracting attention from the intense love story of Anna and Vronsky, the suffering of Karenin and the silent presence of the boy Seryozha, the Karenins' son.
Since 2005, the performance based on Tolstoy's immortal novel has won the hearts of viewers around the world and remains the calling card of Boris Eifman's troupe. Tickets for the ballet "Anna Karenina" are a unique opportunity to take a fresh look at the classics and "read" Tolstoy through the dance of talented artists.
