When Art Becomes Destiny: "Rodin, Her Eternal Idol" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre
The Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre will present its production "Rodin, Her Eternal Idol" on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. The ballet transports the audience into the world of French art, recounting the complex story of the sculptor Auguste Rodin and his gifted pupil, Camille Claudel. While she became both a lover and a muse to the master, Claudel herself yearned to step out from his shadow and forge her own identity in the art world. Their relationship spanned fifteen years and left an indelible mark on both of their lives. The ballet premiered on November 22, 2011, and features a musical score composed of works by Maurice Ravel, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Jules Massenet.
Claudel’s personal drama unfolded against the backdrop of her struggle for recognition and independence. Following her separation from Rodin, her condition deteriorated; she fell into social isolation and suffered profound psychological distress. Camille spent much of the remainder of her life in a psychiatric hospital, where she passed away in 1943. This tragic biography serves as a starting point for reflections on the fragility of the human psyche, the contradictions inherent in love, and the trials faced by those who dedicate their entire being to their art.
Boris Eifman conveys this story not through a detailed biographical account, but rather through movement, gesture, and the emotional expressiveness of the dancers.
The choreography conveys a clash of personalities, a creative dependency, and the painful drifting apart of two people who were once close. The production combines psychological depth with striking, expressive stage imagery. The set design was created by Zinovy Margolin, the costumes by Olga Shaishmelashvili, and the lighting design is the work of Gleb Filshtinsky and Boris Eifman. The performance lasts two hours. You can purchase tickets for the production "Rodin, Her Eternal Idol" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre on our website.
