The ballet "Anna Karenina" is back at the Alexandrinsky Theatre
This production is more than twenty years old, and since the premiere, everyone has been talking about this ballet as a new milestone in Eifman's work. The choreographer has truly done the impossible - no one on the domestic stage has ever managed to show Tolstoy's novel so deeply in dance.
The choreographer removed all the secondary lines of the novel and focused on the love triangle "Anna - Karenin - Vronsky", in which a real fire of passions unfolded, ultimately leading the main character to a tragic ending. Already in the first act, Serezha's toy children's train appears, carefreely puffing as it runs around in a circle on the proscenium, and in the finale, the train is portrayed by the artists of Eifman's troupe themselves, which became a very unusual and memorable directorial decision.
The scary image from Anna's dream is personified by the corps de ballet, dressed in black leather jackets. Even the corps de ballet here is not just a crowd "for show", but a full-fledged acting character. These same "black" people "dance" the movements of the very train under whose wheels (in reality - into whose arms) Anna will throw herself. In the finale, four rows of dancers in black tights merge with rigid, synchronized movements into a terrible machine, where the arms move like the metal pistons of a destructive locomotive, which will be the final point in the destructive love of Anna and Vronsky.
The ballet uses music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. To create the necessary structure, Eifman deliberately selected fragments from fourteen different works by the great Russian composer.
Tickets for the ballet "Anna Karenina" by Boris Eifman at the Alexandrinsky Theater are a completely new interpretation of the Russian classics, well known to all of us from school.
