"Red Giselle" returns to the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre!
Her life, full of drama and rich with both artistic triumphs and failures, was a series of emigrations, wanderings through foreign lands, personal tragedies, and betrayals by loved ones. Ultimately, she ended up in a mental hospital for twenty long years. Such a plot could have been the basis for an entire novel. Boris Eifman was deeply touched by the ballerina's fate and decided to create a performance in her honor. The title "Red Giselle" arose naturally: "Giselle" as a tribute to Spesivtseva's brilliant performance of the role, and "red" symbolized the revolutionary events in which she was immersed as the prima ballerina. The premiere of "Red Giselle" was a true sensation. The production enjoyed several successful runs in Russia and abroad until it was removed from the repertoire.
In 2015, Boris Eifman revisited Spesivtseva's story, updating the choreography while preserving the original plot. The new version boasts more emotion, passion, and expressiveness, making it one of the masterpieces of modern ballet to the music of Tchaikovsky, Schnittke, and Bizet. The set design has also undergone changes, becoming more expressive and heartfelt. "Red Giselle" reflects more than just the tragic fate of one ballerina; it is a dedication to all talented artists who, for various reasons, were forced to leave their homeland and face difficult fates. The appearance of this production on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre was a true gift for all true ballet connoisseurs.
