Boris Eifman's ballet "Crime and Punishment" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre: Dostoevsky's third novel in a choreographic interpretation
The Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre is performing "Crime and Punishment" at the Alexandrinsky Theatre. This is the third novel in Dostoevsky's "Great Pentateuch," which the choreographer translates into the language of dance. Eifman had previously created choreographic interpretations of The Idiot (1980), The Brothers Karamazov, and two productions based on Dostoevsky's final novel—The Karamazovs (1995) and Beyond Sin (2013). True to his signature principles, Boris Eifman does not illustrate the textbook text. Instead, drawing on the expressive and exploratory tools developed over decades, he attempts to provide his own answers to global questions about the inner nature of man, the significance of universal moral guidelines, and the consequences of their overthrow. The production combines the dramatic tension of Dostoevsky's prose with the expressive potential of contemporary ballet.
